Home Addition and Home Extension
As the title states, a home addition is simply a way of adding to an already existing home or construction. A home addition can often be a much smaller project, such as adding a bathroom, or it could be much more extensive, such as adding an extra master suite or a full bathroom and kitchen to a home that already exists. Home addition is becoming more popular because the housing market is currently seeing so many foreclosures. This article will give you a general idea on what home addition and home extension is and which one you should choose.
Additions Vs Extensions
The ‘new normal’ has also boosted the appeal of a first-floor home addition over an extension.
Similar to an extension a home addition will give your home more living space. However, you will not have to give up any of your yard as an ‘addition’ goes up and not out, like an extension does. In other words, when you have an addition done to your home you will gain another floor level. Adding height rather than length. There have always been distinct pros and cons to each option, but the need for more defined work spaces away from the noisy heart of the house – the kitchen and living room – has given additions an edge in popularity.
Your home addition plans need to take into consideration the existing property lines and how those property lines relate to the structure of the home that you have in mind. Many times adding on to a home will involve tearing down certain walls, installing new doors and windows, or reconfiguring the interior of a home. All these things take time and planning and if you are not prepared to spend that time and preparation, then your home addition will end up costing you more money in the long run than you planned for. You also need to ensure that you have all of the required permits in order to get any of your changes approved. This is especially true if you are adding on to an older home.
The best way to save money when building onto an existing house is to plan out your home addition in stages. Do some research online to find a good master plan template that you can use to develop your plan. Make sure you have a clear understanding of the steps you are planning to do before you start tearing down walls, installing windows and doors, etc. Also, always check with your local council to make sure that there are no underground elements to your property and that there are no special rules associated with adding onto your existing house other than the zoning laws in your area.
